Religious Education Curriculum
At St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, Religious Education is at the very heart of school life. Through faith-filled teaching, prayer, reflection and lived experiences, we help children grow in their relationship with God and develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.
Inspired by our mission:
“We stand united in faith with the courage to build a loving world of truth, justice, peace and wisdom,”
we nurture children spiritually, morally, socially and academically so that they may flourish as compassionate and confident members of God’s family.
We believe that Religious Education is far more than a subject taught in lessons: it is a way of living. Faith is woven throughout daily school life and helps shape the values, relationships and experiences that define our community.
Our Religious Education Curriculum
At St John Fisher, we follow the Lighting the Path Religious Education programme, developed to support children in growing in knowledge, understanding and lived faith.
This curriculum enables children to:
- Develop a deeper understanding of Scripture and Catholic beliefs
- Explore the teachings, traditions, and celebrations of the Catholic Church
- Reflect on their own faith journey and personal experiences
- Ask important questions about meaning, purpose and morality
- Develop respect and understanding for people of different beliefs and cultures
- Grow in compassion, wisdom and responsibility
Through engaging lessons, meaningful discussion, prayer, scripture, music, art and reflection, children are encouraged to think deeply and make connections between faith and everyday life.
What Children Learn
The Religious Education curriculum is carefully planned to help children progressively develop their understanding of:
Scripture and the Life of Jesus
Children learn about key stories from the Bible and the teachings of Jesus, exploring how these continue to guide our lives today.
Prayer and Worship
Pupils experience different forms of prayer and reflection and are encouraged to develop their own personal relationship with God.
Sacraments and Catholic Life
Children learn about the sacraments, liturgical seasons, Church traditions and what it means to live as part of a Catholic community.
Catholic Social Teaching
Inspired by Gospel values, pupils learn about justice, compassion, dignity, stewardship and how faith calls us to care for others and the world around us.
Other Faiths and Worldviews
We encourage children to value diversity and respect people of all faiths and backgrounds, promoting understanding and dialogue in an increasingly diverse world.
Learning Through Faith
Children’s Religious Education experiences extend beyond the classroom through:
- Prayer and liturgy
- Class and whole-school worship
- Celebration of feast days and liturgical seasons
- Parish links and sacramental preparation
- Charity fundraising and social action
- Pupil leadership opportunities
- Reflection and spiritual development
At St John Fisher, we want every child to leave us with a secure understanding of their faith, a strong moral foundation, and the confidence to live with kindness, courage and hope.
Love. Learn. Shine.
